On March 20, 1980, Mount St. Helens in Washington, a supposedly dormant volcano, began to quake and rumble. The local population was evacuated to a "safe" distance 8 miles away. Later, the side of the mountain began to bulge. Scientists were not alarmed because past research of volcanoes indicated that they never blew sideways. Then on May 18 the side of Mount St. Helens exploded, shooting tons of debris downhill at the speed of 150 miles per hour. A minute later, the volcano exploded upward with the equivalent power of 500 atomic bombs! Two hundred thirty square miles of forest were devastated and 57 people lost their lives. The scientists had assumed that natural events would continue as before. But they were wrong. The book of 2 Peter tells us of a future time when a similar misplaced confidence will be destroyed by the fiery end of our world (3:4-7). But the good news is that God will build "new heavens and a new earth" (v.13). He is "not willing that any should perish," and He is patiently waiting so that more people will find true safety in His Son Jesus (v.9). They need only accept the salvation He offers. Have you trusted Christ for your safety? -Dennis Fisher		1980년 3월 20일, 워싱턴 주에 위치한 휴화산으로 여겨졌었던 세인트 헬레네 산이 흔들리며 우르릉거리기 시작했습니다. 그 지역 주민들은 약 13 킬로미터 떨어진 이른바 ‘안전거리’ 지역으로 대피했습니다. 후에 산 중턱이 불룩해지기 시작했습니다. 과거의 화산연구에 의하면, 화산은 한 번도 중턱에서 폭발하지 않았기 때문에 과학자들은 이에 대해 별로 관심을 갖지 않았습니다. 그런데, 5월 18일에 세인트 헬레네 산의 중턱이 폭발하여 시속 250킬로미터의 속도로 엄청난 양의 파편을 산 아래로 쏟아내었습니다. 잠시 후에는 500개의 원자폭탄과 같은 위력으로 화산이 윗쪽을 향해 폭발했습니다! 약 600 평방 킬로미터나 되는 임야가 황폐화되었고, 57명이 생명을 잃었습니다. 과학자들은 자연현상이 예전과 같이 반복되리라고 가정했습니다. 그러나 그들이 틀렸던 것입니다. 베드로후서는 이와 유사한 잘못된 신뢰가 이 세상의 불의 종말에 의해 무너질 것이라는 미래의 시점에 대해 얘기합니다 (3:4-7). 그러나 좋은 소식은 하나님께서 "새 하늘과 새 땅을" (13절) 건설하실 것이며, "오래 참으사 아무도 멸망치 않고" 더 많은 사람들이 그 아들 예수님 안에서 진정한 안전을 발견하기를 인내하며 기다리신다 (9절)는 것입니다. 그저 예수님이 베푸시는 구원을 받아들이기만 하면 되는 것입니다. 당신의 안전을 예수님께 맡기셨습니까?

God's people must point the way if others are to escape God's judgment.		하나님의 백성들은 하나님의 심판을 피하려는 사람들에게 피할 길을 가르쳐 주어야 한다.
